Amherst Island Honours the People of Ukraine
Saturday, June 4 at 10 AM
Everyone on Amherst Island is invited to participate in planting a sunflower garden at St. Paul’s Church in honour of the people of Ukraine. Sunflower seeds will be supplied, and extra seeds will be given to all who would like to take some home and plant them in their garden. Sunflowers have long been a beloved symbol of Ukrainian national identity. Now, the sunflower has taken on new layers of meaning, emerging as a “global symbol of resistance, unity and hope”.
Sunday, June 5 at 11 AM
Everyone in the community is invited to St. Paul’s Church for a special service honouring Ukraine. Father Don Bailey, the pastor of St. Alban’s, will be joining Nathan Townend, lay preacher at St. Paul’s, to conduct this special service. Stephen Bruce Medd, a songwriter, storyteller and singer (who opened the Neilson Store Museum and Cultural Centre last weekend), will be a special guest. Stephen has added music to a poem he wrote in honour of his Ukrainian mother-in-law. He will be performing this ballad and another original piece of music at this service.
Join us as we stand with the people of Ukraine and hold them in our hearts.
